Here's a pricing trick as old as razors and as current as your cat's litter box: sell the machine cheap, then own the refills. In pet tech it rarely announces itself. The product page says $459, the comparison shopper sees "$240 less than the leader," and the part that matters — that the machine only accepts the manufacturer's own consumables, at the manufacturer's own price, forever — lives in the accessories tab.

The mechanics of lock-in
A consumable is anything the device eats on schedule: litter, liners, filters, batteries, food (for feeders), treats (for cameras that fling them). Every consumable is a recurring cost — that part's unavoidable. The trap is specifically about who controls the price:
- Open consumables: the machine takes any clumping litter, any trash bag, any standard filter. Dozens of brands compete for your monthly dollar. Prices stay honest because they have to.

The SNOW+ is a competent machine — it works offline, there's no subscription — but its liner system converts a one-time $459 purchase into a $14 monthly relationship you can't shop around. And note the direction of the gap: it widens every month you own the box. At five years, it's $336.
For contrast, the category leader shows what the absence of the trap looks like: the Litter-Robot 4 costs a steep $699, but takes any clumping litter and ordinary trash bags in its drawer. Expensive machine, open consumables — every dollar of its ~$1,131 three-year cost was visible on day one, and no future pricing decision by Whisker can change your monthly spend. The trap wears other costumes
Litter liners are the clearest example, but the same structure shows up across pet tech:
- Water fountain filters. - List every consumable the device touches: litter, liners, filters, bags, batteries, food. If the accessories tab is longer than the feature list, slow down.
- For each, ask: can I buy a generic? "Takes any clumping litter" is open. "Requires [Brand] refill cartridges" is the trap. Ambiguity ("works best with...") usually means technically open — verify which.
- Price one month of refills at the official rate, multiply by 36, and add it to the device price. That's the honest sticker. The arithmetic is the whole trick — it's also exactly what our true cost pages precompute for every device we cover.
- Stress-test the supply chain: if this company stopped selling refills tomorrow, does my device still work? If the answer is no, you're not buying an appliance, you're buying the front end of a subscription.
- Compare at 36 months, never at checkout. A $60 discount that costs $4 extra per month is a loan, not a discount — paid back at $144 over three years, no interest disclosed.

No need to rage-quit hardware that works. Three practical moves:
- Re-run the math before replacing. If you own a SNOW+, the $459 is spent; the question is whether ~$14/month forward beats buying out into a different machine. Often, riding out the hardware's life is the rational call — just don't re-buy into the lock-in at replacement time.
- Stock refills opportunistically when they're discounted, within reason. You're hedging price increases, not prepping for doomsday.
- Watch for genuine third-party compatibles. Popular locked-in devices sometimes attract aftermarket refills. Verify fit and safety — especially for anything involving a machine that moves while your cat is nearby — but competition, when it appears, is your friend.
